The surface waves of a liquid in a rigid fluid-filled container is excited by vertical sinusoidal oscillation. Faraday instability is one of the three classical hydrodynamic instability problems in fluid mechanics, with the two others being Rayleigh-Benard convection and Taylor-Couette flow.
